For us October is the beginning of the Holiday season. We have at least half a dozen birthdays this month - my youngest, my son in law, his mother and brother, my sister in law, one of my best friends, and me! Then there is Halloween, next is Vetran's Day and Thanksgiving, followed by Christmas/Hanukkah, and New Year's. The days get shorter but the days get busier.
During summer of 2021 I decided to get a head-start and design my very own October quilt. I got the top pieced, but then the migraines from my cervical spine issues took over and everything was placed on hold for the next 10ish months while I had surgery, healed, and returned to work. Now that I'm back to work full time and have had the energy to get this little side hobby/business running, I pulled this out and decided to practice some custom quilting.
Last night I rolled it off of the longarm, and wow!! I'm loving how it turned out. It feels strange giving myself a pat on the back, because of course my inner sabatour is telling me, "Look here, see this mistake, and look over there, and there, and there. See you really aren't good enough to be doing this." When honestly, all things considered, it came out really nice. I'll keep it just as is, since it is my quilt.
There are some mistakes. I picked some out, but others I left. For example, initially I was thinking that bordering the pink and white blocks would look awesome with the stitching inside the block. after two rows, it really wasn't looking a great as I thought. So I did one block wiht the stitching on the outside... And it looked a lot better. Like 100% better. If it was a customer quilt I would have taken it off the frame (probably would have tested two blocks to start out) and unpicked the less than perfect looking blocks. But this is my quilt, with all the perfect and unperfect pieces.
Another "mistake" was the border. It was WAVY!! Like super wavy. Almost amatur wavy. But leaving it on, and not redoing gave me some practice quilting a wavy border. And guess what... yes you can quilt a wavy border. Ask me how. :D
Many other good practice efforts here that made my skill set stronger and a learned a lot. The fabric is #AGFspookyandsweeter, Custom designed quilting using a combo of edge to edge (@urban.elementz #spiderweb), my own design #bcaribbon (Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon) for the pink and white blocks, inner border my design candycorn border and corners, and outer border by #creativestudio7 #geometricrope. Can’t wait to get the binding on it and start using it!
